| Another year, another Halloween. I will be setting up, "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!" outside in the driveway again this year. Hopefully we'll get more kids this year. For those of you with children, feel free to stop by for candy on your way home from driving to more lucrative places to trick or treat. We should be out until 8:30 PM or so. Plus, Mel wants to take pictures of our friends' children that stop by. Enjoy the evening. Stay safe! If anyone wants to sit out there with me (Mel won't be) just gimme a call ahead of time and I'll be sure to have a seat out for 'ya.

| I could say the weather, which is great, but I've never known anywhere else so really I just take it for granted. I also take living close to San Francisco for granted... the diverse culture, the startling views, the great food. I guess I could say the convenience is nice... I know where I'm going, how to get from one place to another, everything I "need" is at my fingertips. But the real reason? The hookups... and the random friends I bump into now and then.
My Comcast digital box has been acting up recently and it has messed up our television watching. I've called numerous times to complain only to have my box reset over and over again. The recent Cal game was lost (oh well), a Niner game (again... oh well), and Grey's! Though Mel and I realize that Grey's can be watched online, there is something about watching it on our television.
Anyhow, the cable person (not the cable "guy" since it could very well be a woman... what if Charlize Theron showed up?) came to my door and when he walked in immediately asked, "Don't I know you from somewhere?" Turns out we used to attend youth group together. We haven't seen each other in probably ten years. After catching up a bit, he fixed my cable (it was my fault... stupid cheap splitters), didn't charge me (he could have because of the cheap splitters), and gave me his number in case anything else ever happens that's Comcast related. I have a lot of people to call for things, but I've never had a Comcast hookup until today. Sweet.
The poker boys may also see a new face this week. Awesome.
Oh yeah, teaching's going great. Unbelievably busy. Maybe believable to those who teach.

| Today was 7th grade orientation. After I helped pass out schedules I decided to walk down the 45 minute long ID card line to meet some of my students (and their parents). I looked at the schedule of this one kid, found out he wasn't one of mine, and pointed towards his actual teacher. Half an hour later he came up to me and said that his real teacher LOOKED like a good advanced math teacher. I asked him what I look like, if not an advanced teacher. He thought for a couple seconds before stating, "Well, you look like... a good Chinese teacher". I don't think we know each other well enough for him to pull the race card. I like him already.
My brother and his wife had their first child today. I am an UNCLE! Crazy. Mel and I went over there to visit our new nephew and I must say, he is adorable. I'm not too keen on newborns... they're honestly not all that cute to me, but this kid is CUTE. He's also a ball of energy and has some strong lungs. He's the first Lau of a new generation of Laus. Wow. Mel and I are glad they went first. That's just too much pressure. =)

| Whew! After months of studying (well, I wouldn't say MONTHS), the CSET Math Subtest II scores came in today and I did indeed pass. I am ALMOST NCLB (No Child Left Behind) compliant. I recently found out that the next step in the credentialing process is passing a U.S. Constitution test similar to the one the newly departed Adonal Foyle just took to become a US citizen. (We'll miss you Adonal!) I have to take that test soon or I won't be able to apply for an internship which would allow me to receive benefits and first year teacher pay (yes!). I still have my credential to finish through Chapman, but the hardest part is over (I think). Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers... and a special thanks to a former Adams student who took time out of her busy summer to tutor someone twice her age. "You want ME to tutor YOU?!?!?!" Yes. And give me back my Italian Job DVD.
Oh, for those of you outside the world of education, being NCLB compliant basically means I'll be working more hours and getting paid less.

| For the last few months... well, years actually, I keep having to reassure Mel that we live in a safe El Cerrito neighborhood. Today I left my shoes out to dry on the front porch when some idiot took them. My SHOES! I feel so violated. They took the time to walk up to my porch and take my shoes. Now I have to go find them again. Now I'm thinking about leaving some olds clothes out there to save me a trip to Goodwill. Maybe the idiots will take some old clothes. I'm going to leave the laces on the porch tomorrow since those shoes are hard to wear without the laces. Might as well take those too. =(
